Neurosurgeon Monica Wehby, MD, a past member of the board of directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, is running for U.S. Senate in Oregon.

She won the Republican primary in May, defeating Oregon Rep. Jason Conger and three other candidates with 51% of the vote and will run for senate against incumbent U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., in the general election on November 4.

“As a first time candidate, I am traveling the state listening to people’s concerns and sharing my ideas to address the issues most important to Oregonians. The anxiety and frustration many people have with the current state of things is almost palpable. I think the mark of a good leader is listening to the needs and wants of those you serve, instead of pro-actively dictating what you think is the best solution to their problems. On the health care front, I have spent the last 30 years promoting solutions that enhance access to high quality, affordable health care at the local, state, and national levels,” Wehby told Spine Surgery Today.

Wehby is the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Randall Children’s Hospital, in Portland, Ore. She is past president of the Oregon Medical Association and the Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland.
