PHILADELPHIA — Leaders in sports medicine, professional sports, media and business gathered to share their perspectives on the benefits of sports at the Rothman Institute’s Impact of Sports Summit, here.

“Sports truly does saturate our lives,” Michael G. Ciccotti, MD, chief of sports medicine at the Rothman Institute, said.

Presenters at the meeting spoke about the positive intersection of sports with health care, business and philanthropy, and discussed how sports impacts individual lives as well as the influence of sports on health care, business and the overall economy. Ciccotti said what is interesting about sports is how it impacts people’s lives on multiple levels — from an individual level up to a global level.

“What is interesting is we normally think about the person who performs the sports — the athlete. Sports is so much more than the athletes,” he said.

Ciccotti said that sports are an “incredible psychosocial phenomenon” that involves many people in health care, business, management, media, marketing and industry. Health care providers, especially those involved in the musculoskeletal care and treatment, are just a part of sports as the athletes themselves, he said. — by Kristine Houck, MA, ELS
