There has been an increase in the number of orthopedic registries used worldwide to detect possible problems with devices, particularly in the wake of major recalls of orthopedic total joint replacement implants that have occurred since the 1990s. At meetings and other forums, orthopedic surgeons also debate how to best introduce orthopedic devices to the market to avoid such problems in the future.

In the July/August Orthopaedics Today Europe cover story, sources present arguments for and against a stepwise introduction of implants and address its impact on patient safety, product development and innovation in orthopedic design.
