Levine named head of orthopedic surgery at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center

Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons announced the appointment of William Levine, MD, for the role of chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Levine was also named orthopedic surgeon-in-chief of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. Both appointments will become effective July 1.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Levine to his new leadership role,” Steven J. Corwin, MD, chief executive officer of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, stated in a press release. “His extensive background in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine will be pivotal in our continued provision of innovative, outstanding, and patient-centered care.”

Currently overseeing 31 athletic teams as the head team physician for Columbia University, Levine has served in numerous leadership roles since joining New York-Presbyterian/Columbia in 1998. Most recently, he has been the department’s vice chair for education, director of its residency and fellowship programs, chief of the shoulder service, and co-director of the Center for Shoulder, Elbow & Sports Medicine. Levine is also the Section Editor, Shoulder & Elbow, for Orthopedics Today.

Levine will succeed Louis U. Bigliani, MD, who is retiring after 16 years as department chair.
