WASHINGTON – Monday was another fabulous day at the American Association of Orthopaedic Executives Annual Conference. Three members of Congress participated in a town hall meeting to update attendees on important issues, such as the importance of advocacy and the most effective ways to communicate issues with members of Congress. Their message was timely as many attendees are preparing to visit Capitol Hill to advocate for H.R. 4077, which will allow health care providers to negotiate equals against insurance companies, for a solution to the Medicare sustainable growth rate, to develop differences between the meaningful use requirements for primary care physicians and specialty physicians, and to address the reporting requirements that burden physicians today.

I visited some of the wonderful vendors who support the conference. Sean Weiss of Doctors Management provided every attendee with an important tool to develop a comprehensive and meaningful compliance program. Catherine DiMare-D'Souza, MS, showed the wonderful marketing posters she develops for practices, and people from Trellis Healthcare provided attendees with benchmark data with which to evaluate their practices.

Along with the great networking opportunities in the exhibit hall, I had the opportunity to hear some great lectures. I attended a lecture on fair market valuations of practices, ancillaries and compensation agreements given by Stephen Diagostino CPA/ABV and Michael Stover, CPA/ABV, CFF, both of Somerset CPAs. I also heard Todd Godfrey, MBA, speak about how to keep an independent practice going during times of economic uncertainty. Thanks to the American Association of Orthopedic Executives for making this happen.
