Periprosthetic joint infections pose a constant challenge to orthopaedic surgeons, many of whom are interested in new research into ways to reduce bacterial colonization.

An article in the latest issue of Orthopaedics Today Europe discusses in vivo and in vitro analyses of implants coated with a resorbable antibacterial-loaded hydrogel with a 2-year shelf life. The material can be implanted in patients for added bacterial protection.
