Use of a surgical template to perform a 3-D corrective osteotomy aided bone union at a mean of 4 months postoperatively in patients with cubitus varus deformity, according to results of a recently published study.

“Three-dimensional corrective osteotomy with the use of a custom-made surgical template that is designed and produced on the basis of computer simulation is a feasible and useful treatment option for cubitus varus deformity,” Yukari Takeyasu, MD, PhD, and colleagues wrote in the study abstract.

After surgery using a 3-D corrective osteotomy with a custom surgical template, Takeyasu and colleagues followed 30 patients for 12 months, analyzing radiographic parameters, such as the humerus-elbow-wrist angle and tilting angle in addition to shoulder and elbow range of motion (ROM), according to the abstract.

They found the mean humerus-elbow-wrist angle improved from 18.2° to 5.8° and the tilting angle improved from 25° to 38°. They noted that hyperextension of the elbow and internal rotation of the shoulder were normalized in all patients. However, one patient had a mild recurrence of cubitus varus deformity, while 27 patients had an excellent result, 3 patients had a good result and no patients had a poor result.
