Jo A. Hannafin, MD, PhD, named first female AOSSM president

CHICAGO – The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine named Jo A. Hannafin, MD, PhD, from Hospital for Special Surgery its first female president at its annual meeting, here.
“It is the largest sports medicine society in the world, and I am excited to have been chosen as president,” Hannafin, who is the Director of Orthopedic Research and Orthopedic Director of the Women’s Sports Medicine Center at Hospital for Special Surgery, stated in a press release. “I became the 21st female member of the organization in 1997. Today, just over 5% of the members are women, and it is an honor to be the first woman chosen for the leadership position.”

Hannafin is the head team physician for the Women’s National Basketball Association team, the New York Liberty, and a team physician for the U.S. Rowing Team. She is a member of the medical commission of the international rowing foundation “Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron,” or FISA, and is the National Rowing Foundation vice president of the board of trustees.
Her previous appointment to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine was chair of the Research Committee. Hannafin said she hopes to promote unknown sports medicine physicians during her tenure as president as well as strengthen the organization through well-attended meetings that are intellectual and innovative.
