Excellent long-term survival found for femoral component revisions

Researchers from The Netherlands found a 96% survival rate of femoral component revisions with impaction bone-grafting and a cemented polished stem.

The researchers used the X-change femoral revision system (Exeter, Exeter, England) and the cemented polished Exeter stem. This study continued a previous study of 33 consecutive femoral component revisions with an 8-year follow-up. This new study extended the follow-up to 15 year to 20 years.

The overall survival rate was 96% for femoral re-revisions at an average follow-up of 17 years and 100% for re-revision for aseptic loosening. The researchers found an average subsidence of 3 mm and noted three femoral fractures and one stem re-revision.
