Zimmer Holdings Inc. has introduced the REX Cement Stop bone restrictor.

According to a company press release, , the bone restrictor is expandable inside the intramedullary canal and can allow adaptation to any shape irregularity within the canal. The plug meets the demands for a modern bone cement restrictor and also solves the limitations of existing cement plugs — including intramedullary fat displacement and cement leakage.

The restrictor is made of gelatin and polymethacrylate. Compared to traditional press-fit and universal restrictors, Zimmer noted their new plug shows a favorable resistance to pressure even if deployed below the femoral isthmus while also reducing the risk of fat embolism.
