Stryker Corporation, of Kalamazoo, Mich., has acquired OtisMed Corporation, a privately held, software technology firm in Alameda, Calif., that is focused on developing and commercializing accurate, cost-effective and customized joint replacement solutions.

OtisMed will focus on customizable instrumentation that has the potential to complement the many benefits that surgeons and patients realize from the Stryker Triathlon Knee System, as well as other Stryker implants, according to a press release from Stryker.

OtisMed will operate within the Stryker Orthopaedics Division and remain at its current location, the release stated.

“Stryker is acquiring OtisMed because it has been a leading innovator in developing customized cutting guides for total knee replacements. This acquisition has the potential to combine the best-in-class Triathlon Knee System with instrumentation that will present surgeons with an additional offering for their approach to total knee replacement,” a Stryker Corporation statement read.

“Additionally, the OtisMed business unit will focus on developing new technology solutions across other product lines. The business will accelerate Stryker’s efforts to develop and commercialize highly accurate, cost-effective, customized surgical solutions,” the company said in the statement.

OtisMed, founded in 2005, has offered products for orthopedic applications, such as the OtisKnee device, a custom intraoperative cutting guide used during total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. OtisKnee is part of the OtisMed-branded Custom Fit Knee replacement procedure.
