Smith & Nephew announced in a press release a new, free service that helps patients more easily adhere to their physician-prescribed EXOGEN Ultrasound Bone Healing System treatment plans.

According to the release, the new service — EXOGEN CONNECTS — is a personal wellness and support program that helps motivate and alert patients so they can achieve better outcomes when using EXOGEN, the only bone growth stimulator device approved to accelerate fresh fracture healing in situations for which the device is indicated. By enrolling in EXOGEN CONNECTS, patients receive treatment reminders and tips for healthy living via text messages, emails or automated phone calls. Patients determine the frequency and method of contact.

Free enrollment in the program is currently offered in the United States only.

The EXOGEN Ultrasound Bone Healing System is an ultrasound device that emits a low-intensity pulsed ultrasound signal which has been shown in laboratory tests to stimulate genes and growth factors that are critical to the body’s natural bone healing process, according to the release.

According to the release, the EXOGEN Ultrasound Bone Healing System is indicated for the non-invasive treatment of established nonunions excluding the skull and vertebra. In addition, EXOGEN is indicated for accelerating the time to a healed fracture for fresh, closed, posteriorly displaced distal radius fractures and fresh, closed or Grade I open tibial diaphysis fractures in skeletally mature individuals when these fractures are orthopedically managed by closed reduction and cast immobilization.
