RSB Spine LLC has announced allowance of European patent 1847240, covering specific design iterations of its line of InterPlate cervical and lumbar intervertebral fusion devices.

"Fusion remains one of the most common spinal procedures performed by neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons, despite the introduction of numerous disc replacement implants," James M. Moran, D. Eng., chief technical officer of RSB Spine, stated in a company release. "This intellectual property reinforces RSB's freedom to respond to evolving surgeon preferences and supports our plans for European sales. Ongoing legal disputes also highlight the need for medical device companies to have the protection of a strong patent portfolio."

In July, the company received a United States patent involving design of interbody devices that prevent stress shielding, complementing a previous European approval for the same concepts.
