Zimmer Holdings, Inc. announced in a press release its recent launch of its Patient Specific Instruments at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in New Orleans.

Zimmer Patient Specific Instruments (PSI) utilize MRI technology and preoperative planning tools to create customized cutting guides that are tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy. Customized guides for knee replacement surgery support surgeons in performing accurate and safe procedures. Zimmer PSI may be used in minimally-invasive procedures, the company said.

“Zimmer Patient Specific Instruments can assist in expediting the total knee replacement procedure for both surgeons and patients,” Jeff McCaulley, president, Zimmer Reconstructive, said. “We’re excited to make these instruments available to surgeons and anticipate that PSI will become a key addition to our existing portfolio of leading technologies.”

Zimmer PSI are designed to ensure accurate placement of the knee implant and are compatible with the Zimmer NexGen Complete Knee Solution and the Gender Solutions Natural Knee Flex systems. Zimmer PSI streamlines the surgical procedure, eliminating several steps in total knee replacement surgery and potentially increase efficiency in the operating room. The first knee implant procedures utilizing Zimmer PSI were recently completed and the products are now widely available to surgeons across the country.
