KOHALA COAST, Hawaii — With a Hawaiian blessing and an air of excitement, Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2010 kicked off with a combined session on practice management issues for the practicing orthopedist.

“This is our sixth Orthopedics Today meeting and the third that we have presented in Hawaii,” Course Director Douglas W. Jackson, MD, said to open the meeting. “We have tried to make it as interactive and informal as possible with a very accessible faculty.”

For the first day, Section Chair Jack M. Bert, MD, moderated presentations on practice mergers, different practice scenarios for 2010, use of physician extenders, and buy-in and buy-out procedures among others.

Overall, the program includes more than 110 presentations and discussions over four days. In addition to yesterday’s practice management session, tracks this week will include knee and hip arthroplasty, sports medicine and trauma.

“I would like to thank the distinguished faculty and especially the section chairs who have helped so much,” Jackson said. “They are all great educators who do original work.”

In addition to Bert, section chairs for this years meeting include; Richard F. Kyle, MD; William N. Levine, MD; Thomas P. Schmalzried, MD; and David C. Templeman, MD.
