Cayenne Medical, Inc. announced the launch of AperFix II, a second generation soft tissue repair device for multi-ligament repairs of the knee. The announcement was made at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in San Diego, CA.
Key to AperFix II is the introduction of its new Cannulated Tibial System, according to a Cayenne Medical press release. The system provides surgeons with increased ease-of-insertion and standardized positioning of the implant. For ACL repair, the system allows for rotation of the two tendons representing the anteromedial and posterolateral bundles to more accurately match the positioning of the native ACL bundles. In addition, new enhancements to the femoral device allow for easier graft insertion and placement within the tunnel.
The AperFix II System offers a simple and efficient technique to obtain consistent circumferential graft compression, restoring native knee kinematics, Kenneth Montgomery, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Tri-County Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine, in Morristown, NJ, stated in the Cayenne Medical press release. I believe this procedural enhancement will ensure the integrity and strength of the reconstructed ligament, providing patients with a more stable knee.
The addition of the Cannulated Tibial System, along with enhancements to the femoral device, serve to strengthen Cayenne Medicals innovative AperFix ligament reconstruction technology, which utilizes a single tunnel, all-inside approach for attaching the soft tissue graft at the aperture of the femoral and tibial tunnels. According to the press release, this technique creates a shorter, stiffer and more anatomic ligament repair.
As the industry continues to lean in favor of soft tissue ligament reconstruction, we have seen much success with our flagship product AperFix and an increasing interest in its anatomic repair through aperture graft fixation, James W. Hart, executive chairman of Cayenne Medical, stated in the press release. The strategic enhancements weve made to the tibial portion of the procedure with AperFix II are in line with this trend and affirm our commitment to evolving our technology platform for the benefit of surgeons and their patients.
The AperFix II Cannulated Tibial System includes the tibial implant made from PEEK polymer, a tendon expander, a guide wire, a cannulated screw and a driver pre-loaded with tibial sheaths and a sheath holder.
