NEW ORLEANS — As an acknowledgement for his work as an educator, mentor and champion of diversity initiatives Augustus A. White III, MD, PhD, was awarded with the William W. Tipton Jr., MD Leadership Award here at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
White expressed his pride in being an orthopedic surgeon and especially to be linked through the award with the accomplishments and vision of the late American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) leader Tipton.
AAOS President Joseph D. Zuckerman, MD, and Tipton’s wife, Pat, presented the award to White, which includes a $5,000 honorarium.

“I would like to express my deep appreciation to the AAOS, to the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and to my friends and colleagues, all of whom made some contribution to this whole process,” White said.
White currently is the Ellen and Melvin Gordon Distinguished Professor of Medical Education, professor of orthopaedic surgery, at Harvard Medical School, where he has mentored medical school students as a former master of the Oliver Wendell Holmes Society.
The first African-American student ever to attend Stanford University, White was the AAOS Diversity Award winner in 2006.
In addition to mentoring, White dedicates much of his time to diversity-related activities.
He is a founding member and president of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society.
White also served the AAOS as the inaugural chairman of its diversity committee.
Established by friends, colleagues, and organizations through the AAOS and the OREF, the Tipton Award honors the qualities exemplified by Tipton, including leadership, commitment to mentorship, diversity, bridge-building and collaboration.
