The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in partnership with Genzyme Biosurgery has announced a new research grant program for studies related to early osteoarthritis and/or preventing progression of the disease.

“Genzyme is very pleased to continue our ongoing support of the AOSSM through this important research award,” Jeffrey L Kraines, MD, the head of medical affairs and senior medical director of Genzyme Biosurgery, stated in an American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) press release. “Our hope is that by providing greater opportunities to the orthopaedic sports medicine research community, more innovative ideas will be generated to help improve the lives of patients with this disabling disease.”

Two grants

Two grants will be awarded. One grant will be renewable for 3 years and provide $50,000 annually for a clinical research study which is subject to a progress review. The other will provide a one-time $50,000 award for a basic science/lab project. This grant will be awarded to different investigators during a successive 3-year period, according to the release.

The grants will be awarded to projects that have broad applications to osteoarthritis in the general population and do not need to specially address sports medicine injuries. Studies investigating viscosupplementation will not be considered for the program.

Application guidelines

Grant applications will be evaluated based upon the potential impact of the proposed project in the osteoarthritis field, the study approach, and the ability of the investigator and site to carry out and complete the research. In addition, principal investigators of the proposed studies must be AOSSM members who have completed their training.

Grant winners are expected to submit the results of their studies to the AOSSM for podium presentation and to the American Journal for Sports Medicine for potential publication. The deadline to apply for the grants is August 1, 2010.
