Aesculap Implant Systems announced in a press release the availability of the new SecureSpan Laminoplasty Fixation System for use in treating diseases of the spine such as cervical stenosis and myelopathy. The SecureSpan design addresses surgeons’ needs and offers unique benefits such as a secure screwdriver interface, color-coded instrumentation and implant set, and an assembly device.

Aesculap said it will feature the SecureSpan product at the 2011 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting being held April 11 - 13, 2011 in Denver.

Cervical laminoplasty procedures are used to expand the cervical canal while leaving the protective posterior elements in place. The Aesculap SecureSpan fixation system was designed based on surgeon feedback, as an easy-to-use, stable system for precise fixation, the company noted.

“We're very pleased to expand our posterior cervical spine fixation portfolio with the SecureSpan Laminoplasty Fixation system. SecureSpan allows us to offer surgeons a unique system when laminoplasty is indicated as the patient’s best option,” Chuck DiNardo, president of Aesculap Implant Systems, stated in the release.

Some of SecureSpan’s unique features include a self-retaining screwdriver that keeps the screw fixed while being implanted for improved handling. A comprehensive size offering of color-coded implants eases visual identification of the correct implant size and provides a range of options when choosing the best size to fit each patient’s anatomy. An assembling block device allows for a secure and efficient method of construct assembly, according to the press release.
