In his presidential address, Berry noted the accomplishments of the society including work by David Llewellyn, MD, on an American joint replacement registry and the integration of new technologies into the Orthopaedic Learning Center. Berry also highlighted the partnership of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) to provide funds for educational programs, such as disaster response courses spurred by the earthquake in Haiti, and the work of the Orthopaedic Political Action Committee of the AAOS for Medicare reforms. Berry also spoke about continued collaborations with other organizations to educate the public, such as the STOP Sports Injuries and Decide to Drive campaigns.
“Unity remains the key to our success as an organization and, I daresay, as a profession,” Berry said. “There will always be […] voices trying to pull us apart. But let us remember the words of Benjamin Franklin, ‘We must all hang together, or surely, we shall hang separately.’”
