The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons announced that William R. Martin III, MD, has been named the organization’s new medical director.

Martin said he will adopt what he calls a “tripod” of new responsibilities at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) office in Washington D.C., focusing on medical affairs, research and scientific affairs, and government relations, according to a press release. The new role is effective June 1, 2010.

“Acting as medical director marries my passion for orthopedics with my keen desire to work in administration and health policy development,” Martin stated in the release. “I may not be operating on patients, but being an orthopedic surgeon with a passion for advocacy will serve the academy very well.”

Prior to his new role, Martin served the AAOS as a member of the Council on Advocacy and the Diversity Advisory Board. He was a member of the Academy Leadership Fellows Class of 2004, and has served on the Healthcare Delivery Committee. He has also received many awards for his research, humanitarian, and leadership efforts.

“We are so fortunate to have such a motivated and dedicated new medical director, especially during this period of opportunity and challenges within the changing healthcare landscape,” said the Academy’s Chief Executive Officer Karen L. Hackett, CAE, FACHE. “Dr. Martin’s continued involvement in advocacy for AAOS, for orthopedic patients and for other medical organizations has definitely prepared him for his newest endeavor in Washington.”

Martin graduated from Tufts University and received his medical degree from Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University. He earned a general surgery internship, followed by an orthopedic residency at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. He completed an adult foot and ankle reconstruction fellowship and postgraduate work in public health at the University of North Carolina.

He also has been an active member of the Western Orthopaedic Association, the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the Arizona Orthopaedic Association and the Arizona and American Medical Associations.
