NEW ORLEANS — Past President of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Douglas W. Jackson, MD, was presented with the academy’s Diversity Award, here, at the organization’s Ceremonial Meeting.

“Receiving the award is a highlight of my life,” Jackson said. “The people who have worked with me on diversity initiatives have inspired and educated me. I learned a lot from them and am thankful that together we are creating a stronger foundation for the future of our specialty.”

In presenting the award to Jackson, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) President Joseph D. Zuckerman, MD, said, “No one has been more effective in advancing diversity than Doug Jackson.”

As president of the AAOS in 1997, Jackson, of Long Beach, Calif., appointed an ad hoc committee to explore diversity issues in orthopedic surgery, which led to the creation of the AAOS Diversity Advisory Board. In its short existence, the board has fostered diversity within the academy in several ways, including creating a mentoring program for minority medical students and coordinating a cultural competency residency program “Grand Rounds” and collaborating on programs with the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society and Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society.
