Slovakian joint register official reports good hemiarthroplasty results

Issue: October 2011

PRAGUE — The total hip arthroplasty register for Slovakia includes data for about 33,000 total hip arthroplasty procedures and shows 92% implant survivorship for living patients who were not revised with more than 98% survivorship for deceased patients who were not revised during their lives, according to a presentation during the European Arthroplasty Register symposium at the SICOT XXV Triennial World Congress 2011.

“The revised subgroup represents only 1.37% of all patients,” Libor Necas, MD, said during his presentation, adding “more and more implants are coming on the market this year also.”

To predict and better prepare for future total hip arthroplasty (THA) developments, register officials like Necas, an orthopaedic surgeon at University Hospital, in Martin, Slovakia, have used statistics to project the population’s size and characteristics out to 2050.

When Slovakia’s THA register was established in 2003, the country’s orthopedists were selecting from about 50 implants made by 11 or more companies. Yet, the revision burden started to decline at that time as the demand for the procedure grew due to more Slovakians being older than 65 years.

While most of the country’s population groups are now predicted to grow in size, “At the upper end of the age spectrum, the population over [age] 65 will grow and the growth will be quite intensive … from 17% to 30%. This will definitely increase the demand for arthroplasty in the future,” Necas said.

Citing information in the register, Necas said hemiarthroplasty now represents less than 15% of cases in the Slovakian national register, “but the results of the hemiarthroplasty are very good. The mean survival time is 7.85 years. It is superior to all other groups.”
