Orthopedics Today has partnered with OrthoMind.com, a professional networking and collaboration website designed by and for orthopedic surgeons, in an effort to pioneer a new way of communicating and interacting with the news.
“Orthopedics Today’s new collaboration with OrthoMind is another example of our goal to bring our readers the latest educational material in a succinct and time efficient way,” Douglas W. Jackson, MD, Orthopedics Today Chief Medical Editor, said. “The new platform allows a place for orthopedic surgeons to interact electronically with peers in a private setting. It is much like sitting in a room with other orthopedic surgeons commenting, interacting and finding out what they really think on an issue.”
Orthopedics Today will include a “Discuss on OrthoMind.com” notation in its Orthopedic Medical Legal Advisor column in print and on ORTHOSuperSite.com to allow orthopedists to privately discuss legal issues that impact the specialty with their peers on OrthoMind.com. Selected dialog-provoking articles on ORTHOSuperSite.com will also feature a live link directing orthopedists to discuss hot topics in real-time with others in their profession on OrthoMind.com. In addition, a summary of four Orthopedics Today articles will be featured on OrthoMind.com each week. OrthoMind members can access the full-text of these articles on ORTHOSuperSite.com. OrthoMind’s eNewsletter will also highlight ORTHOSuperSite.com articles with brief descriptions and web addresses for the stories.
One of the creators of OrthoMind.com, Jon Hyman, MD, said that the partnership will encourage practicing orthopedists, residents and fellows to become more active participants in what they read and contribute to the field.
“In this advancing information age, it’s no longer about simply reporting news or counting page views, it’s become more powerful to interact with the news,” Hyman said. “Engaging readers/surgeons to give feedback and share opinions and insights is a powerful way to stimulate dialogue and understand how the news impacts our communities and professions.”
Hyman noted that since OrthoMind.com is a website exclusively for orthopedists and orthopedists in training, members have a safe and private forum to discuss articles that appear in Orthopedics Today and ORTHOSuperSite.com, and the process can “increase the volume of our voices and increase the scope of our knowledge.”
“We are impressed with OrthoMind’s philosophy of and commitment to communication among orthopedic physician colleagues,” said Joan-Marie Stiglich, ELS, Senior Vice President, SLACK Incorporated. “The synergies between the two groups are remarkable and we are looking forward to a strong partnership that we hope will benefit the orthopedic community and in turn their patients.”
Through the collaboration, Hyman said that readers of Orthopedics Today and OrthoMind members can expect more creative ways to interact with their news sources and each other. They can also anticipate a synergy in knowledge sharing.
“By collaborating around topics of importance in orthopedics, these two entities are helping each other educate surgeons, enhance peer review, facilitate knowledge dissemination and shorten feedback cycles,” Hyman said. “They are giving orthopedic surgeons the capacity to discuss relevant information in real-time, both with the authors and with each other.” – by Gina Brockenbrough, MA
