For our fourth annual meeting on the islands, in 2011 Orthopedics Today Hawaii moves to Kauai, the garden isle.

In addition to the location change, there will be a change in format and faculty at the upcoming meeting.

“Based on feedback from attendees at our previous Hawaii meetings, we are going back to the single track format in 2011,” Douglas W. Jackson, MD, course director for the meeting and chief medical editor of Orthopedics Today, said. “Next year, attendees will not have to choose between two simultaneous lectures, but can take in all the educational opportunities offered.”

Enhanced program

David Labadie, MD, and family enjoyed the free time provide by the half-day sessions at Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2010. They are seen here at a Banyan Tree Gathering.

The program also has been enhanced for the 2011 meeting. It will have more focused presentations in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, total joint and trauma.

“We will have more case presentations, where attendees will interact with our experienced faculty, and use our popular audience response system even more than at our past meetings,” he said.

Joining the Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2011 course chairs — Jack M. Bert, MD, for practice management and arthroscopy; Thomas P. Schmalzried, MD, for joint arthroplasty; William N. Levine, MD, for shoulder and elbow; and Richard F. Kyle, MD, and David C. Templeman, MD, for trauma — will be new faculty members: Donald H. Johnson, MD, FRCSC; Nicholas A. Sgaglione, MD; Douglas A. Dennis, MD; Wayne G. Paprosky, MD; Jonathan Haas, MD; and Patrick Yoon, MD.

Personal and meaningful

Also, the non-CME lectures and discussions have been moved from one day to two different afternoons. “During these sessions we will have a health care lawyer, David M. Glaser, JD, available for question and answer sessions in regard to all the changes that are taking place in health care today,” Jackson said.

Other highlights in the program: John D. Kelly IV, MD, and his wife Marie Sakosky-Kelly, RN, will discuss the practice of balancing a successful orthopedic career with an equally successful family life. Attendees are invited to bring along their significant others for this personal and meaningful presentation.

And in what has become a tradition at the Orthopedics Today Hawaii meetings, each afternoon attendees and faculty are invited to meet for informal Banyan Tree Gatherings — an opportunity to acquaint yourself with other attendees and talk one-on-one with the faculty members to discuss their presentations or get opinions on troublesome cases.
