Big changes are in store for the 2011 annual meeting of Orthopedics Today Hawaii – the fourth on the islands, and the first to take place in Kauai.
The move to Kauai means a new environment for the record number of attendees.
“A limited number of our attendees have been to Kauai — the ‘garden island’ — and I think changing the location means we can deliver the same high-quality education experience with the chance to try something different,” said Douglas W. Jackson, MD, chief medical editor of Orthopedics Today and the meeting’s course director. “I think the change has piqued the interest of a lot of people.”
A new format
In addition to the change in venue, this year’s meeting will also feature a change in format. Based on feedback from attendees at previous Hawaii meetings, the Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2011 will be a single-track program.
“We found [with concurrent sessions] that a lot of people felt they had to choose between two lectures they wanted to hear,” Jackson said. “We will be surveying the members again, as we rely on their input a great deal in designing our course.”
William N. Levine, MD, the Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2011 course chair for shoulder and elbow surgery, said that while there are advantages to having concurrent sessions, the new format will allow registrants to take advantage of the faculty that Jackson has assembled — as well as the state-of-the-art curriculum.
“As always, there is plenty of time set aside for discussion, case presentations and registrant participations, which has always made this course special,” Levine said.

New faculty
Joining the Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2011 course chairs — Jack M. Bert, MD, for practice management and arthroscopy; Thomas P. Schmalzried, MD, for joint arthroplasty; William N. Levine, MD, for shoulder and elbow; and Richard F. Kyle, MD, and David C. Templeman, MD, for trauma — will be new faculty members: Donald H. Johnson, MD, FRCSC; Nicholas A. Sgaglione, MD; Douglas A. Dennis, MD; Wayne G. Paprosky, MD; Jonathan Haas, MD; and Patrick Yoon, MD.
“We have, as usual, a very impressive faculty,” Jackson said. “They are not only leaders in their fields, but they are also great educators. I try to design a course for the practicing clinician that will challenge their thinking and expose them to some new ideas.”
Levine said he was excited about the faculty in the shoulder section of this year’s meeting.
“Drs. Evan Flatow, Matthew Ramsey and Christopher Ahmad are internationally recognized experts in the field and, more importantly, are passionate and dedicated educators,” he told Orthopedics Today. “Furthermore, we have put together an exciting agenda that should appeal to both the casual and more experienced shoulder surgeon.”
Other features
The 2011 meeting will also feature more CME credits than ever before, as well as more focused presentations in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, total joint and trauma. The practice management sessions on Monday are now CME accredited and will feature lawyer David M. Glaser, JD, available for question and answer sessions.
In what has become a tradition at the Orthopedics Today Hawaii meetings, each afternoon attendees and faculty are invited to meet for informal Banyan Tree Gatherings — an opportunity to acquaint yourself with other attendees and talk one-on-one with the faculty members to discuss their presentations or get opinions on troublesome cases. These also have been CME accredited for the 2011 meeting. – by Robert Press
