VIDEO: Screen for ocular surface disease, set reasonable expectations before implanting premium IOLs
At OSN New York, Kendall E. Donaldson, MD, MS, discusses how to deal with dissatisfied patients after premium IOL implantation. She emphasized setting reasonable expectations, treating residual refractive error and screening for pre-existing ocular surface disease before surgery, among other tactics.

VIDEO: Re-treatment in failed flap cases can yield successful visual outcomes
At OSN New York, Priyanka Sood, MD, shares results of a retrospective chart review of corrective procedures performed in patients whose LASIK flap complications had previously led to an aborted procedure. Excellent visual outcomes were achieved when re-treatment was done over aborted microkeratome-created flaps as well as when surface ablation was done over aborted femtosecond laser-created flaps, she said.
VIDEO: Remedy at hand for negative dysphotopsia
At OSN New York, Samuel Masket, MD, describes the IOL design he developed to combat negative dysphotopsia. The lens includes a groove on the anterior optic that allows it to overlap the capsule, with the bulk of the lens remaining in the capsular bag.
VIDEO: Both art and science involved in choosing enhancement approach
At OSN New York, Douglas A. Katsev, MD, discusses the options for surgeons who must follow up on presbyopic IOL implantation with enhancements. According to Katsev, the best way to avoid the need for enhancement is to employ good technicians, to be current with the latest IOL power formulations, to use an aberrometer and to observe current outcomes to inform future decisions.
VIDEO: Topography-guided LASIK offers potential to increase corneal optics
At OSN New York, Alan Faulkner, MD, lists the benefits of topography-guided LASIK, including the potential to increase corneal optics and overall eye performance. However, there are still unknowns, such as the role of epithelial thickness and remodeling, and the relationship between lenticular and corneal astigmatism, he said.

Ocular Surgery News’ Premier Surgeon 300 list cracked the top five most-read stories of 2016 in refractive surgery. FDA approvals and study results also garnered a lot of interest.
Midpoint, max-plus refraction equivalent after inlays
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Midpoint refraction is equally reliable and, on average, 0.50 D more minus when compared to a max-plus refraction in patients who have Kamra inlays, according to a poster presented at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting.
VIDEO: Low add multifocal IOLs decrease glare, halos
Low add multifocal IOLs decrease untoward effects such as glare and halos compared with predecessor lenses, according to Tal Raviv, MD, who discussed the evolution of the lenses at OSN New York. The low add lenses allow for more functional intermediate vision and improved distance vision, he said, with the trade-off being the possibility of some spectacle dependence for near vision.
VIDEO: Communication key to preventing dissatisfaction after premium lens surgery
NEW YORK -- Addressing dissatisfaction after premium lens surgery begins with preoperative screening and communicating fully with patients, Kendall E. Donaldson, MD, MS, said at the OSN New York meeting. Fully communicating realistic expectations of refractive surgery helps the surgeon select the ideal candidates for surgery, lessening the possibility of an unhappy postsurgery patient. For those who are dissatisfied after surgery, treating residual refractive errors is key, she said.
