VIDEO: Surgeons present a novel approach to presbyopia laser surgery
MAASTRICHT, Netherlands – At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons winter meeting, Frederic Hehn, MD, and Magda Rau, MD, present Isovision, a novel bilateral approach to presbyLASIK. This treatment is performed in two steps and aims to create a wavefront-optimized corneal profile for near and distance vision.
VIDEO: New technology develops data to create personalized defocus curves
MAASTRICHT, Netherlands – At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons winter meeting, Arthur Cummings, MD, discusses a novel technology being developed by IROC science. The device, held on spectacles, gathers data on vision in daily activities. That data may be used to create a personal defocus curve and help inform decision-making regarding which IOL technology is best for the patient.

VIDEO: Most, but not all, refractive procedures safe in relation to endothelial cell loss
MAASTRICHT, Netherlands — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons winter meeting, Massimo Busin, MD, summarizes the content of his keynote lecture on endothelial cell loss following refractive surgery.
Novel cross-linking application for low myopia shows promise
MAASTRICHT, Netherlands — Photorefractive intrastromal cross-linking, or PiXL, is a novel treatment option that appears promising for low-grade myopia, according to one speaker here.
VIDEO: Long-term results show SMILE is suitable for all degrees of myopia
MAASTRICHT, Netherlands — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons winter meeting, Osama Ibrahim, MD, PhD, gives an overview of the long-term results of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). He was able to demonstrate that the procedure is suitable for patients with all degrees of myopia, from high to low. He discusses the advantages of SMILE over LASIK, as well as the challenges that still remain.
VIDEO: Dealing with refractive error after multifocal IOL implantation
MAASTRICHT, Netherlands — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons winter meeting, Aylin Kılıç, MD, gives pearls on how to deal with refractive error in patients previously implanted with multifocal IOLs. LASIK may be the best choice, timing is crucial, and dealing with posterior capsule opacification is mandatory.

PUBLICATION EXCLUSIVE: Refractive surgeons look to SMILE into the new year
Premium surgeons are embarking upon the new year with new refractive surgery procedures recently approved by the FDA, such as the Raindrop corneal inlay from ReVision Optics. Even more exciting is the FDA approval of the VisuMax small incision lenticule extraction procedure from Carl Zeiss Meditec for reduction or elimination of myopia from –1 D to –8 D, with 0.5 D cylinder or less and manifest refraction spherical equivalent of –8.25 D in the eye to be treated in patients who are 22 years of age or older with documentation of stable manifest refraction over the past year.
