BLOG: The dark side of soybean
There has been much written about the benefits of “going vegetarian” for general health as well as being considerate of our fellow animals. Whatever the reason, getting enough protein is always a challenge for those who shun animal sources. You can’t just give up meat and expect to be healthy, because true health does require that balance of protein, fats and carbohydrates.
BLOG: Clarification on the carbohydrate controversy
These days, all we hear is the bad news about carbs: how they are in all of the tasty foods but cause us to get fat. But do we really know the details of what a carbohydrate is and why it acts the way it does? What about the “good” carbs?

Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce progression of geographic atrophy
Increased dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids may be associated with reduced risk of geographic atrophy, according to a study.
AREDS2: Lutein, zeaxanthin show beneficial effect for advanced AMD
The recently published results of the second Age-Related Eye Disease Study show that, perhaps most significantly, replacing beta carotene with lutein/zeaxanthin concomitantly improved the safety of the supplement formula and increased its effectiveness in reducing progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration. Surprisingly, the study also found that, in the ratios measured, omega-3 fish oils had no statistically significant effect.
AREDS2 provides answers – and more questions
While it is true that history is made in eye care on a daily basis, it is only on rare occasions we witness an event of epic proportion – something that forever alters the way we think about a particular aspect of clinical practice. BLOG: The myth and the mystique of cholesterol
Cholesterol is a misunderstood molecule. Many people might not be aware of it, but, for a long time, there has been a vocal minority of doctors, researchers and health professionals who believe that cholesterol and fat have been wrongly convicted as the primary promoters of heart disease. Along with many of our fellow health professionals, we believe that this emphasis on cholesterol has caused us to take our attention off what we believe to be the true promoters of heart disease – inflammation, oxidative damage, stress and sugar. Therefore, blaming cholesterol for heart disease is like blaming the fireman for the fire.
Review finds older Americans’ diets lacking eye healthy nutrients
A recently published review found that many Americans older than 50 are not consuming enough of the nutrients that promote eye health in their daily diet, according to a Bausch + Lomb press release.
BLOG: AREDS2 results and reaction
The long-awaited results of the AREDS2 study were released recently. This multicenter trial was conducted in 82 clinical sites in the U.S., in both academic and community-based centers with retinal specialists from 2006 to 2012. The 4,203 participants were between 50 and 85 years of age.
Lutein/zeaxanthin may not significantly reduce rate of cataract
Daily oral supplementation with lutein/zeaxanthin had an insignificant effect on rates of cataract development and cataract surgery, according to a sub-analysis of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2.
Alterations in AREDS formula recommended
SEATTLE — The addition of lutein/zeaxanthin to and the subtraction of beta carotene from the AREDS supplement formula was recommended by investigators in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2.
