AOA offers resource on updated Eyeglass Rule

The American Optometric Association has provided a resource of frequently asked questions and other important details about the updated Eyeglass Rule, which goes into effect Sept. 24.

The updated rule, also known as the Ophthalmic Practice Rules, will require optometrists to obtain patient confirmation that they received their eyeglass prescription during their appointment. The Federal Trade Commission states that the prescription must be given to a patient before promoting sales of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Read more.

ThinOptics launches Prescription on Demand glasses

ThinOptics, a manufacturer of ultra-slim reading glasses, has launched its Prescription on Demand service for purchase of customized prescription eye wear online, the company announced in a press release.

“We see tremendous potential for collaboration between optometrists and ThinOptics,” Gadi Ponte, CEO and co-founder of ThinOptics, told Healio. “Our Prescription on Demand service is designed to complement the crucial role of eye care professionals, not replace it.” Read more.

Eyenavision, Avulux launch clip-on eyeglass option for migraine relief

Eyenavision and Avulux have launched Chemistrie Avulux, an eyeglass clip-on option for people with migraines and light sensitivity.

“[Eye care providers (ECPs)] can play a key role in caring for patients with migraine and light sensitivity,” Charles Posternack, MD, Avulux’s CEO, said in a company press release. “We are thrilled to partner with Eyenavision to help ECPs expand their scope of practice and support even more patients with the innovative new Chemistrie Avulux clips.” Read more.

Half of survey respondents say ‘Made in the USA’ label is relevant

Fifty-two percent of American consumers surveyed said a “Made in the USA” label is an important factor in their purchasing decisions, according to a report from the Vision Council.

Healio spoke with Vision Council vice president of research and inSights Alysse Henkel at Vision Expo West about the group’s research on the impact of the “Made in the USA” label, Canadian vs. U.S. purchasing habits, use of safety eye wear and priorities in choosing ECPs and eye wear. Read more.

Survey shows most optical products purchased in store

As more purchases are made online, a recent survey indicated that the majority of optical products are still bought in person, the Vision Council announced at Vision Expo East.

“Five out of every six prescription glasses purchases are still in person,” Alysse Henkel, vice president of research and insights at Vision Council, told Healio. “Optometrists are still super-relevant for these kinds of purchases.” Read more.
