The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation has announced its partnership with WHO on the organization’s SPECS 2030 initiative, a global effort to increase refractive error coverage by 40% by 2030.
“Vision care is not just a health priority — it is a social and economic imperative,” Jérôme Salomon, PhD, WHO’s assistant director-general of universal health coverage for communicable and noncommunicable diseases, said in a OneSight press release. “The SPECS 2030 initiative, which underpins the [United Nations] ‘Vision for Everyone’ resolution, reminds us that effective collaboration can amplify impact, delivering tangible results for communities worldwide.”
According to the release, the collaboration will focus on “knowledge sharing, technical input and data provision” to ensure the implementation of the “Vision for Everyone” resolution. In addition, the foundation will provide support across the five key pillars of the SPECS 2030 initiative, which are:
- improving access to refractive services;
- building the capacity of eye care professionals;
- promoting public awareness about eye health;
- reducing the cost of eye wear and services; and
- strengthening data collection and research.
“By uniting WHO’s leadership in public health with our expertise in delivering innovative, on-the-ground solutions, we believe we can create a multiplier effect to extend vision care to even the most underserved regions,” Anurag Hans, head of mission at EssilorLuxottica and president of the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, said in the release. “Together, we have the power to transform lives and uplift entire communities.”
