INDIANAPOLIS — The oral supplement NutriTears significantly improved dry eye symptoms and tear volume compared with placebo in adults with dry eye disease, according to research presented at Academy 2024.
“Start to think about your patients earlier in their dry eye journey in terms of support, so that you can reduce their advancement in the dry eye spectrum,” Neda Gioia, OD, CNS, FOWNS, founder of Integrative Vision, told Healio.
In a multicenter, double-blind study, Gioia and colleagues enrolled 155 participants with mild to moderate dry eye, who were randomly assigned to consume one soft gel capsule of Blink NutriTears (Bausch + Lomb), which contains a blend of curcuminoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, and vitamin D3, or a soybean oil placebo daily.
According to results, participants in the NutriTears group had significantly improved tear volume compared with the placebo group at 28 and 56 days, as well as significantly lower Ocular Surface Disease Index scores at 14, 28 and 56 days.
Gioia also noted that NutriTears met all secondary study endpoints, including improvements in tear breakup time, Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness scores and corneal staining, all of which reached statistical significance from days 28 to 56.
One participant from each group reported at least one adverse event, none of which was serious.
“We are aware that dry eye is a multifactorial disease, and due to this, we need to have many options to address the patient’s symptoms and the clinical signs of dry eye,” Gioia said. “The role of nutraceuticals is in dire need of expansion within this space.”
