INDIANAPOLIS — Miebo eye drops significantly improved comfort among contact lens wearers without negatively impacting tear film osmolarity, corneal staining or visual acuity, according to a presenter at Academy 2024.

“We saw that the product was being used to help treat a lot of our dry eye patients and we were getting excellent results,” David Geffen, OD, of the Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute in San Diego, said in this Healio video. “However, the product had no indication for contact lens wearers.”

In a single-site, open-label study, 46 adults — 26 daily contact lens wearers and 20 monthly contact lens wearers — were instructed to use Miebo (perfluorohexyloctane ophthalmic solution, Bausch + Lomb) four times per day for a month.

The researchers found that mean comfort scores significantly improved, with no adverse changes in tear film osmolarity, corneal staining, meibography and visual acuity.

“There may be potentially many other uses for this product, and I’m looking forward to being able to investigate these in the future,” Geffen said.
