INDIANAPOLIS — According to the National Keratoconus Foundation, Nov. 10 is World Keratoconus Day, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the condition and advocating for those affected by it.

Gloria Chiu, OD, FAAO, associate professor of clinical ophthalmology at the USC Roski Eye Institute in Los Angeles, told Healio that for her, it’s a time “to reflect on the important role that we as optometrists play in diagnosing and managing this condition.”

Chiu emphasized the importance of looking for clues that may point to keratoconus, such as abnormal changes in vision, eye rubbing and family history.

“Let’s remember our important role, what we can do for these patients, and remember to look out for this condition as we’re practicing in our clinic every single day,” Chiu said.
