INDIANAPOLIS — Alcon announced the launch of Precision7, a 1-week replacement contact lens containing a new technology that provides up to 16 hours of comfort and precise vision in both sphere and toric designs, at Academy 2024.

The Precision7’s Activ-Flo System addresses the need for comfort and affordability, “when a daily disposable lens is not an option,” the company said in a press release.

“Now, patients can start and end every week fresh with a first-of-its-kind contact lens featuring Activ-Flo technology,” Max Wolf, Alcon general manager and head of vision care and contact lenses, said in the release. “This is also the first time we are introducing both sphere and toric lenses to the U.S. market simultaneously, allowing [eye care providers] to address the needs of the majority of patients right away.”

The silicone hydrogel lens is made of serafilcon A material and is a “unique combination of a water-loving moisturizing agent embedded in the lens matrix and a proprietary replenishing agent that is continually released to moisturize the surface for 7 days,” the company said in the release.

Shamien Labedzki, Alcon U.S. Vision Care director of marketing, told Healio during a company-sponsored event at Academy 2024 that a 3-month supply of Precision7 is available in a 12-pack that costs about $1 per day.

While the FDA approved the lens for 7 days and 6 nights of continuous wear, Labedzki said Alcon’s marketing will not carry that message.

“We see it as peace of mind for the doctor, if a patient naps in a lens, for example,” she said, adding that Alcon will have a “Pick Your Day” campaign, which encourages patients to choose the same day each week to switch to a new lens.

“It has an easy and intuitive replacement schedule that allows my patients to pick their preferred day of the week to replace their contact lens,” Jason Compton, ODFAAO, of Compton Eye Associates in New York City, said in the press release.

Labedzki noted that if patients choose to remove the lenses at night, they should clean them as they would any daily wear lens.

According to the release, Precision7, the newest addition to the Alcon WaterInnovations portfolio of contact lenses, is available now through select eye care providers and will be more broadly commercially available in the U.S. in January 2025.
