The AOA Foundation and PERC Alliance announced that applications are being accepted for the second annual Golden Opportunity Award, which honors the late David Golden, OD, by supporting emerging optometrists.

“We are proud to continue the Golden Opportunity Award in partnership with the American Optometric Association, the AOA Foundation and the Golden family,” Jason Lake, OD, general manager at PERC Alliance, said in an AOA press release. “This award not only honors Dr. Golden’s legacy but also provides crucial support for optometrists aspiring to own independent practices, a goal he held dear.”

According to the release, up to three optometrists will be awarded $50,000 each to help establish their first practice. Winners of the inaugural award were Alyssa Putman, OD, of Elmira, New York; Melissa Macco, OD, of Reno, Nevada; and Rebecca Chown, OD, FAAO, of Hood River, Oregon. Each of these recipients used the award to expand eye care for underserved populations in their communities, honoring Golden’s legacy of supporting optometric leaders who represent underrepresented groups or who are committed to providing service in areas in need.

Applications for the award are open through Jan. 15, 2025.
