In this Healio video, Jacquie M. Bowen, OD, president-elect of the American Optometric Association, discusses the AOA’s recent consumer alert about over-the-counter color-changing eye drops.
“We’ve gotten a lot of questions about the safety and the efficacy and the pharmacology behind these drops, so I’d like to tell you what we know so far,” Bowen told Healio.
According to Bowen, these drops have gained a lot of traction on social media and are being marketed as a “safe alternative” to color-changing contact lenses. However, they are not approved by the FDA, which issued a warning letter to the manufacturer in February citing several violations related to the product.
Because it is unclear what active ingredient in these drops actually changes eye color, “there is absolutely no way that the AOA can recommend you approving the use of these drops,” Bowen said.
