In this Healio video, Mahnia Madan, OD, FAAO, explains that while many cosmetics are not tested for safety around the eyes, new research shows that three Lumify Eye Illuminations products are both safe and effective for use.

“The cosmetic industry definitely needs more products that are safe and that we can confidently tell our patients they are not going to harm their eyes,” Madan, who practices in Vancouver, British Columbia, said.

In three single-center clinical trials, Madan and colleagues assessed the ocular safety and cutaneous tolerability of Bausch + Lomb’s nourishing lash & brow serum, hydra-gel brightening eye cream and 3-in-1 micellar cleansing water & eye makeup remover. They enrolled approximately 50 healthy women in each 8- to 12-week trial.

According to results that will be presented at World Ophthalmology Congress, there were no clinically relevant findings on exam, nor any patient-reported side effects. Most adverse events were mild or moderate in severity, and only one patient experienced periorbital swelling that led to discontinuation in the eye make remover trial.

“The data confirms that there were no safety concerns with the products,” Madan said.

In addition, most participants reported positive results in terms of product performance as early as 2 weeks.

“We can confidently tell our patients this was tested by eye care professionals, and this is safe to be using around the eyes and it’s not going to harm the ocular surface,” Madan said. “Not only that, but you’re also going to see some results.”
