Bausch + Lomb has launched Blink NutriTears, an over-the-counter supplement designed to target the root causes of dry eye disease and promote healthy tear production, the company announced in a press release.
“I’ve often used the analogy of having a toolbox for dry eye treatment, and I believe that supplements are tools that deserve much more attention,” Neda Gioia, OD, CNS, founder of Integrative Vision and Blink NutriTears clinical study investigator, told Healio. “Blink NutriTears is backed by scientific evidence to help address dry eye in a primary eye care setting. It’s crucial to integrate nutraceuticals into our treatment plan and expand our understanding of what effective nutraceutical solutions should look like.”
According to the release, Blink NutriTears contains a proprietary blend of ingredients, which includes lutein, zeaxanthin isomers, curcumin and vitamin D. Gioia noted that the supplement’s patent-pending processing technique “further optimizes the formulation through reduction of its particle size using micronization,” while the incorporation of specific functional oils “help facilitate better bioactive delivery and, hence, better absorption.”
In a prospective, randomized, double-blind clinical trial previously covered by Healio, Gioia and colleagues assessed the safety and efficacy of Blink NutriTears in 155 adults with mild dry eye symptoms.
Participants consuming once-daily Blink NutriTears demonstrated greater improvement in Schirmer’s test results, total Ocular Surface Disease Index score, tear film break-up time and tear film osmolarity by day 56 compared with those assigned to placebo (P < .001), with some improvements reported as early as day 14.
The supplement group also demonstrated significant improvements in corneal and conjunctival staining and total Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness score vs. the placebo group. Moreover, the supplement was well-tolerated, with no serious adverse events reported.
“We need to consider the whole-body health of our patients when addressing ocular conditions. Supplements play a crucial role because, unfortunately, many of our patients are deficient in various aspects of nutrition,” Gioia said. “Dry eye is a multifactorial condition influenced by various deficiencies. Providing nutritional support through supplements is a key element in our dry eye treatment protocol, helping to address these deficiencies and improve patient outcomes.”
According to the release, Blink NutriTears will be available online and at most major U.S. retailers by the end of July.
