Topcon Healthcare has partnered with Microsoft Corp. to create “Healthcare from the Eye,” an AI-powered solution developed to improve health care by prescreening patients for systemic and neurological diseases via a noninvasive eye scan.

According to a Topcon press release, the cloud-based solution uses the Nuance Precision Imaging Network and Harmony, Topcon’s vendor-inclusive, connected data management platform.

“We are committed to making health care accessible and affordable through prescreening using oculomics — leveraging the eye for insights into systemic and neurological health,” Ali Tafreshi, Topcon’s CEO and president, said in the release.

Topcon has been collaborating with Microsoft since February and has initiated several AI-powered screening projects, including one with the University of California, San Diego, that uses AI to help screen and coordinate care for patients with diabetes.

In addition, Topcon established the Institute for Digital Health, a secure population database platform that has been used for several research studies with Visionworks, Keplr Vision and UC San Diego Health Shiley Eye Institute. The platform integrates Microsoft Azure cloud storage and technology to ensure data security, the release stated.

“Microsoft’s health care and AI expertise adds a powerful dimension to Topcon Healthcare’s vision to empower providers with smart and efficient technologies for enhanced patient care,” Peter Durlach, corporate vice president and chief strategy officer at Microsoft Health & Life Sciences, said in the release. “With Microsoft Azure and the Precision Imaging Network, we provide the robust and secure cloud infrastructure essential for developing and deploying real-world applications at scale, integrated directly into provider workflows at the point of care.”
