The American Optometric Association has released a new, evidence-based clinical practice guideline draft, “Care of the Patient with Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma,” which is available online for peer and public review through April 24.

“AOA’s clinical practice guidelines are designed to elevate health care quality by providing doctors of optometry a platform to build quality clinical care to ensure patients are diagnosed and treated based on the best available scientific research,” AOA President Ronald L. Benner, OD, said in an AOA press release. “Public review helps broaden the perspective of input, so this guideline can exist at its best and most useful form.”

According to the release, the AOA first released its consensus-based clinical practice guideline in 1995 and revised it in 2010. This new guideline is the first evidence-based guideline on diagnosing, managing and treating adults with primary open-angle glaucoma.

These guidelines were developed by the AOA evidence-based optometry guideline development group and used standards outlined by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. It must undergo external review by relevant stakeholders, which include physicians, agencies, industry and the public, the release stated.

The final guidelines will be made available later in 2024.
