NEW YORK — Optometrists may be the first to recognize adverse effects of systemic medications, which warrants collaboration with the prescribing physician, Jessica Steen, OD, FAAO, Dipl ABO, said at Vision Expo East.

“We should discuss the potential risk of continuing that systemic medication on ocular health and visual function, and the physician that’s prescribing the medication will carefully weigh that risk against the risk of discontinuing the systemic medication and considering an alternative therapy,” Steen, associate professor and director of the Glaucoma Service at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, said in this Healio video.

Two medications used to treat gynecological cancers have ocular toxicity black box warnings, she noted.
