ATLANTA — Stem cell deficiencies are considered noninfectious sight-threatening complications, so early diagnosis is critical, according to Joseph P. Shovlin, OD, FAAO.

“The key concern we have in clinical practice is that a lot of these things are undiagnosed,” Shovlin said in this Healio video at SECO 2024.

Some cases could progress to the point where the patient needs a keratoprosthesis or even lacks any treatment options.

Causes include contact lens wear, congenital conditions, improper use of topical medications and surgical procedures.
