OrCam Technologies unveiled new features that utilize artificial intelligence for its assistive devices, including an advanced AI companion for OrCam MyEye and a “Just Ask” feature for OrCam Read 3.
“Advancements in AI are not merely a matter of technological evolution; they represent a significant shift in how we interact with our world,” Amnon Shashua, MSc, PhD, OrCam’s co-founder, said in a company press release.
OrCam MyEye assists individuals with visual impairments through immediate text reading, facial recognition, product identification and dynamic interactions, the release stated. The device’s new AI companion allows for more precise responses that are unique to each user, including detailed descriptions of visual input. The companion also accesses the internet, providing understanding of current events and an array of topics.
“In order to provide users with visual impairments with a high level of autonomy, the OrCam MyEye uses sophisticated algorithms and [large language models] to better understand and respond to natural language queries,” Shashua said in the release. “This makes interactions more intuitive and effective for users as they navigate their informational and physical surroundings.”
In addition, OrCam Read 3, a handheld reading companion that uses an interactive AI assistant for people with reading difficulties, now includes a “Just Ask” feature, which captures an image of text and processes it using AI. The company stated that the feature can summarize captured text, answer follow-up questions related to the text and read the full text aloud. The device also leverages internet resources to provide requested information to users.
“With the right application, AI can extend human capabilities, open new prospects for innovation and create a landscape where technology and humanity progress in harmony,” Shashua said in the release.
