Azalea Vision announced the first on-eye test of its ALMA proprietary smart contact lens, which is designed to offer a nonsurgical solution for patients with keratoconus, corneal irregularities, photophobia and presbyopia.
“This test marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of noninvasive treatment options for challenging ophthalmological conditions,” Andrés Vásquez Quintero, co-founder and chief technology officer at Azalea, said in a company press release.
The ALMA lens is the first functional prototype of the company’s smart contact lens platform and includes an embedded diaphragm with an aperture that can be adjusted to filter the amount of light entering the eye. The lens also features liquid-crystal technology, a microchip, a radiofrequency antenna and a medical grade micro-battery.
According to the release, the lens is easy to use and can be programmed by patients and physicians for customized treatment. The first application will focus on patients with irregular astigmatism resulting from keratoconus and other corneal conditions.
“We’re not just developing a new product category in the medical device sector; we’re pioneering a platform with diverse and groundbreaking applications,” Enrique Vega, Azalea’s CEO, said in the release.
