The Vision Council has released its Consumer inSights report for the third quarter of 2023, which found that responses about vision correction, managed vision care and consumer purchasing habits have remained fairly consistent this year.
According to a Vision Council press release, this recent report includes survey data from more than 15,000 U.S. consumers’ opinions and habits relating to vision correction and care.
Highlights from the report include that 40% of respondents had an eye exam within the past year, and the average number of months between exams was 17 months. In addition, two-thirds of respondents use prescription eyewear, of whom more than half (53%) made an eyewear purchase in the past 12 months, and 30% of respondents reported using reading glasses.
The report also found that younger respondents, including millennials and those in Generation Z, reported having annual eye exams less frequently than Gen Xers and baby boomers.
“Seventy-nine percent of our respondents relying on some form of vision correction underlines the importance for people everywhere to prioritize an annual eye exam,” Alysse Henkel, Vision Council’s senior director of market research and analytics, said in the release. “With our data showing that 34% of consumers have not received an eye exam in the last year, there is incredible opportunity for our industry to engage these consumers and emphasize the value in completing an eye exam annually, especially if you use a form of vision correction.”
