NEW ORLEANS — A single application of cryopreserved amniotic membrane effectively treated signs and symptoms of moderate to severe dry eye disease after just 2 days, according to Damon Dierker, OD, FAAO, at Academy ’23.

“We know that if we place that in a patient’s eye for 4 or 5 days or a week, we get great results — we have improvement in DEWS scores, improvement in corneal staining — and that can last up to 3 months,” Dierker, director of optometric services at Eye Surgeons of Indiana, told Healio. “But what happens if we use that same cryopreserved amniotic membrane for only 2 days?”

Dierker and colleagues examined patients with moderate to severe dry eye disease after treatment with a single application of cryopreserved amniotic membrane for 2 days, and saw nearly identical results compared with patients who were treated for up to a week.

“Two days was enough to show improvement in DEWS scores, disease severity and importantly, corneal staining,” he said.
