LAS VEGAS — Scotland-based IbisVision has launched its over-the-internet eye care technology, which allows optometrists to remotely determine a corrective lens prescription, the company announced at Vision Expo West.

“This is the breakthrough we’ve all been waiting for – allowing an optometrist to test for and issue a prescription online,” IbisVision CEO Mark Roger said in a related company press release. “This opens up huge potential not only in making eye care available to all, but in turbocharging e-commerce behind the optometry industry and allowing for optometrists to serve communities without investing vast amounts in cumbersome machinery.”

The new IbisConnect platform requires an internet connection and use of a proprietary remote refraction tool that costs considerably less than traditional equipment, the release stated. The technology expands on IbisVision’s existing internet platform, which originally offered a single test, and now provides 11 different eye exams, using an intuitive interface that performs high-quality readings from the patient.

At Vision Expo West, Justin Birley, IbisVision’s chief operating officer, told Healio that the initial concept for the platform was conceived by an ophthalmologist who envisioned a more accurate and remote method of administering a visual field test The current technology now allows clinicians to perform visual field testing remotely.

The platform has a wide range of uses, such as prescreening, contact lens checks and triage, as well as complete exams, Erica Goldberg, head of U.S. operations at IbisVision, told Healio.

The FDA-cleared platform, which is reimbursable and has been used in the U.S. since April, is currently undergoing clinical trials, the company stated.
