VIDEO: Ask patients with brain injury about visual hallucinations

WASHINGTON — Patients who have experienced brain injuries that are multiple, bilateral, severe or diffuse may present with undiagnosed visual hallucinations, according to a poster presented at Optometry’s Meeting.

Lynn D. Greenspan OD, PhD, Diplomate AAO (PH/EV), FNAP, associate professor of optometry at Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University, said in this Healio video: “Ask [these patients] if they are seeing things. Make it OK that they’re seeing these things. Assure the patient that it’s not anything more than a phantom limb concept, where the brain fills in details of the missing information.”

Greenspan noted that the hallucinations will dissipate over time.
