Bausch + Lomb has unveiled two new products intended to mitigate contact lens dryness: a daily disposable multifocal lens and contact lens rehydrating drops inspired by natural tears.
The Infuse Multifocal silicone hydrogel (SiHy) daily disposable contact lenses feature the company’s 3-Zone Progressive design to correct presbyopia and ProBalance Technology to minimize dryness, according to a press release from the company.
The lenses are made with a next-generation SiHy material called kalifilcon A, allowing them to maintain 96% of their moisture for 16 hours, the company stated. The ProBalance Technology releases a “unique combination of ingredients” during wear to maintain ocular surface homeostasis and minimize lens dryness.
The company also launched Biotrue Hydration Boost contact lens rehydrating drops, the “first and only preservative-free” drops to rewet soft contact lenses, including daily disposables and gas permeable lenses, according to a press release. They are available now at major retailers across the U.S.
The drops match the pH of healthy tears and include ingredients naturally found in tears, including electrolytes and the moisturizer hyaluronan. They also feature a surfactant to help limit deposit buildup on the lenses.
Both the Infuse Multifocal contact lenses and Biotrue Hydration Boost drops contain ingredients inspired by the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society’s Dry Eyes Workshop II report.
Contact lens discomfort affects around one-third of contact lens wearers in the U.S., and the same number wish their contact lenses were more comfortable, John Ferris, senior vice president of global consumer health at Bausch + Lomb, said in the release, citing data from a 2021 study of the U.S. consumer contact lens market (Du Toit et al.).
